I've fired quite a few weapons. The last weapon was a M16A2, last time I fired a weapon, that was in 2006. First time was at age 15 with police officers in the summer of 1978.
I don't hate guns, but I'm not a gun enthusiast. I prefer other training and weaponry for myself, my family. I had this discussion about 10 weeks ago with someone who was still in the military and serves us. We chatted one night for a few hours. He said, "No one needs an AR-15" I replied, "No one needs an AR-15. I like handgrenades. I feel good with them, but its not for civilian life." We agreed. He reminded me, people who are serving are non-partisan.
So, I come to today, again its about separating ammunition keeping that locked up separately from a weapon like a handgun, a rifle, a shotgun and the like. Again, an adult who had a minor still at home doesn't seem to have done the correct thing and it cost innocent lives, mostly young lives once again. As the case in Bend Oregon is investigated we will find out more about the shotguns owner. Why she had a shotgun that apparently was accessible to her teenaged son, along with the ammunition. We have to wait and see if the ammunition was from the mother's home or the teenaged son retrieved or was sold it from elsewhere.
This particular incident is about gun-ownership responsibility. Its about parenting. But also, it's about why did that mother have that shotgun so readily accessible? Had she been threatened? Who was it she may have felt she needed protection from?
I came from anti-gun parents. We never owned a gun. No woman had ever been in the military in my family, except me. No one was ever a Marine in my family except me. I've been through harrowing events in my life. Threatened? Yes. More than once? Yes.
I am someone who realizes the vulnerabilities that await women, married, single or being a single mother.
People will say mental health needs addressing. Yes. But its not the whole picture. People will say we need red flag laws. Yes, but that's again not the whole picture. The third part is gun safety. The fourth is parenting. For this, I lean to proper gun safety and put the onnus on gun owners. Yet, we will learn more as the investigation reveals more clarity. ---Jody-Lynn Reicher
