Writing Reality

After my husband passed mid-2020 I had an Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker on the phone. He said, "These are strange times..." I thought for a second. A guy of few words ten years my senior, a class act who'd gotten to know nearly all about me in just under a decade claimed such. I look back now, and not only was he correct, but I predicted it decades ago to my husband. That was our debate, the one I wouldn't let him win. Before Norm passed mid-2020, he'd experienced the absolute bigotry, greed and stupidity of the American people in the 2016 election. We agreed to 'wait and see' instead of getting stressed over America's decision. "Give it three months..." Again, I saw 'the train coming'. As my husband became suddenly terminal at end of 2019, I began switching from writing books to writing screenplays. I asked an acquaintance in the film business for a tip. She said, "...don't even try. You're not a screenplay writ...

So, as I clocked out of work at the Organic Market, one of the managers and I struck up a conversation about Friday Summer foot-traffic at the market. She about age 29, me 63, I said, "Thank God the first half hour wasn't crazy busy, cause the truck was late." She agreed. I continued, "You know today is like the last summer vacation day for kids in sports and band. Sport practices now start like, when?" She replied, "Monday. You're right..." I added, "You know what's funny? When started high school, we didn't start cross-country practice till the Saturday before Labor Day. That was like nearly 50 years ago." I nearly laughed. She smiled. I remarked, "Yeah, that's when girls were just starting to be able to run long distances. Amazing. Huh?" The look on her face was priceless. 😇
